Solar Chimney Diagrams summer :: winter

Michigan State: I was sorry to see that this house didn't place higher. Not because of the architectural design - a welded aluminum trailer - but because of their passive and active solar solution: a solar chimney contained within a curved exterior wall that distributes or expels heated air depending on the season.

The curved roof on the back side of the house contains the solar chimney used for heat distribution.

Another view of the curved wall/roof cavity. For some good diagrams of how this system works, click on the links above.

These fans at the top of the solar chimney either push the heater air out in the summer or distribute the heated air into the house interior in the winter.

Clerestory windows at the top of the solar chimney, with lighting along the bottom edge.

This perforated felt panel is actually a waste product from the process used to make auto windshield wipers.
