I'd say we've hit the point of substantial completion for the kitchen, the last room in the house to receive our makeover. Here's the final group of photos.

Just to refresh your memory (and ours), here's the BEFORE photo. This is what it looked like when we moved in 30 months ago. About the only thing here that we didn't replace or refinish is the tile floor.

Now onto the new work:

Here the drywall ceiling and soffit is framed out, plastered, and ready to be painted. New recessed lights have been installed, and the waterline is being fed to the new fridge location. The cabinets next to the fridge are reused and the ones above are made from a newly built box with doors that were reused.

Another view of the freshly plastered ceililng.

The final (for now) view of the kitchen with new pendant lighting at the center work table and the built-in wood shelving unit in the background.

punchlist items: shorten pendant cords; build roll-out cabinet to go to the left of the fridge.

Lighting is probably the most important aspect of any interior design project! This is especially true in the kitchen. Our small kitchen has recessed downlights for ambient light; undercabinet fluorescents for task lighting; and 3 pendant fixtures on a dimmer for accent lighting.

This built-in unit takes advantage of a recess which we discovered behind the old fridge location. We used 1x12 poplar from Home Depot and water-based polyurethane.

Cookbooks, wine, and cereal. The three essentials for any kitchen!
