In
the fall of 2000, Seth and I stepped off on what would become a 5-year
project to hike all 270 miles of the Long Trail. The Long Trail runs
the full length of Vermont, and we would be travelling north, from
the Massachusetts border all the way to Canada. For the first half
of the trip the trail coincides with the Appalachain Trail. When the
AT turns right and heads into New Hampshire, the Long Trail continues
north to Canada. The northern part is much more difficult, with higher
elevations and rockier terrain.
The plan was to hike 1 week each year, picking
up each time where we left off the previous year. Most people who
hike the LT in one trip do it in under a month, but we would be stretching
it out a much greater span of time. |
