the Long Trail


    In the fall of 2000, Seth and I stepped off on what would become a 5-year project to hike all 270 miles of the Long Trail. The Long Trail runs the full length of Vermont, and we would be travelling north, from the Massachusetts border all the way to Canada. For the first half of the trip the trail coincides with the Appalachain Trail. When the AT turns right and heads into New Hampshire, the Long Trail continues north to Canada. The northern part is much more difficult, with higher elevations and rockier terrain.
    The plan was to hike 1 week each year, picking up each time where we left off the previous year. Most people who hike the LT in one trip do it in under a month, but we would be stretching it out a much greater span of time.
